LIDAR survey

Members carried out a historic environment survey of a small part of Leechpool/Owlbeech woods in January 2011.

We were slow to get started as we were new to the task but eventually discovered a pillow mound. From the evidence, we think it is the remains of an artificial rabbit warren dating from the 18th century.

Lyn Palmer, (the then East Sussex CC Historic Environment Awareness Project Officer for the Weald Forest Ridge) invited us to do the survey and several members are keen to be more involved.

Lyn explained the project in October 2010 at Southwater and introduced us to LiDAR data and interpretation which we found fascinating.

Also, part of the Chelwood Gate aerial photo and its LiDAR image which we studied, can be downloaded from the East Sussex CC website. By making both full size on your screen, clicking between them helps to interpret the detail.
