Each summer, we take part in the orchid count to record the number of wild orchids in the grass near The Quarry at Southwater Country Park. Although there are variations in the numbers, it is good to see that generally they are healthy.
The count is carried out by several small teams of HGG members roping off a strip of land and carefully combing through it looking for the wild orchids. When the count for that small area is agreed between themselves, it’s recorded and they move on to another, uncounted, strip. In this way, the whole area is covered in one morning.
