Tuesday – I know this is the highlight of the year for some of us, the first day back up on the heath pulling Birch saplings!
As well as being excellent fun and a full-body workout, pulling out self seeded Birch saplings on the heathland is a vital part of the ongoing heathland regeneration project. Without herds of large free-roaming animals grazing and browsing in the area the tree seedlings will quickly shade out the low growing shrubs such as Heather and Gorse that characterise heathland habitats. We work in harmony with the livestock that we do have to graze the areas for a few months each year. The very action of pulling out the Birch saplings by the roots, gets rid of the plant but also importantly disturbs the soil, bringing seeds to the surface, ready for germination in the warm spring ahead. This is the sort of thing a Wild Boar would be doing
